As the name suggests, Stone Cottage Studios is, in fact, a music studio. But it’s so much more.
Father-and-son team Jamie and James Davis Maynard founded Stone Cottage Studios in 2018, transforming a detached stone cottage on the corner of their North Boulder property into a branded space for filming, recording and livestreaming.
Jamie, who has called Boulder home since 1995, has always loved music. While he played guitar and performed during his time at Arizona State University, he ultimately pursued a career in biotech, continuing to nurture his passions for music and photography on the side.
Naturally, James Davis’ upbringing was steeped in music as well; he grew up playing classical bass and attending bluegrass festivals with his father. James Davis pursued film school in Los Angeles but moved back to Boulder during the pandemic, where he and Jamie decided to dedicate more energy to growing Stone Cottage Studios.
As it turns out, a livestream recording space was in very high demand once COVID-19 shut down physical music venues and bars. Musicians were among those hit hardest by the pandemic, and Stone Cottage’s platform allowed them to host safe ticketed events, generating income and valuable, high-quality content in the process. “We invested in the components to be able to curate these high-quality livestreams with multiple cameras and angles, allowing musicians to get fans globally,” says James Davis.
Sean Kelly of The Samples was one musician who had an incredibly meaningful show at Stone Cottage during the COVID era. “The Samples were one of Colorado’s most beloved bands in the 1980s and ‘90s, and having Sean Kelly perform in an intimate, listening-room setting at Stone Cottage was a special full-circle Colorado music moment,” he says. “Bringing a legacy artist into a small, intentional space resonated deeply with longtime fans.”
While those live-streamed shows filled a real need during the pandemic, Stone Cottage Studios began offering more in-person gatherings as the world opened back up. “After COVID, we started a summer concert series in our backyard, which created a following of people coming to our shows,” says James Davis, adding that they sold out the 11-show series in 2025.
Last year, Jamie and James Davis decided to go all-in on creating a space for community in Boulder. Since 2000, Jamie has owned 1928 Pearl Street in downtown Boulder. When his last tenants moved out of the historic brick house, he saw the perfect opportunity to grow Stone Cottage Studios from its roots as a literal cottage studio into a unique performance and recording space in the heart of Boulder.
Stone Cottage Studios’ downtown location has been open since early 2025. The venue may be larger than the original cottage, but it’s still incredibly intimate. The cozy, brick-lined space holds around 25 people, but there are additional simulcast rooms with TV monitors where guests can gather and partake. In addition to regular concerts, the downtown location also hosts monthly open-mic nights.
Crescendo Fine Audio, a hi-fi stereo shop in Wheat Ridge, is leasing the second floor of the downtown venue, adding a retail element to the mix. During the day, shoppers can browse vintage audio systems, musical instruments, records and more, while artists can book studio time for pro audio recording and cinematic video production. “The partnership with Crescendo is a perfect dovetail to Stone Cottage with our programming in the evening,” Jamie says.
And the Stone Cottage footprint continues to expand. In 2025, Stone Cottage kicked off an ongoing partnership with Yellow Barn Farm to begin hosting seasonal performances highlighting Colorado artists in an intimate, rural setting. The inaugural show, featuring Jeremy Garrett and Andy Hall of the Grammy Award-winning Infamous Stringdusters, sold out, setting a strong foundation for the partnership.
No matter which way you choose to experience Stone Cottage Studios, the mission remains the same. “We want to be in service to and in collaboration with community,” says James Davis. “We need spaces for people to come together more than ever, and music is such a great vehicle for expressing humanity.”
