Sleeping under the stars is one of the best ways to explore Colorado. But, sometimes, the hassle just doesn’t feel worth it. Setting up the tent, cooking over an open fire, dealing with a constant torrent of mosquitoes—the list goes on.
Fortunately, there’s a new Colorado camping option that removes all of these headaches and then some. Roadsurfer, a German camper van rental company, recently opened a new location in Denver. That means Coloradans can now easily borrow one of their fully equipped vans and RVs for a long weekend in the mountains.
Founded in 2016 in Germany, Roadsurfer is the brainchild of five childhood friends who wanted to make it easier to rent an RV. The company quickly expanded to other European nations before hopping across the pond to North America.
Today, Roadsurfer has outposts in Vancouver and Calgary in Canada, plus Los Angeles, San Francisco, Los Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Miami in the United States. With the recent expansion, the North American fleet has now grown to some 800 vehicles.
That’s in addition to the roughly 90 locations it maintains in 14 European countries, with its European fleet totalling around 10,000 vehicles.
“Our expansion across the U.S. marks an exciting new chapter for Roadsurfer,” says Susanne Dickhardt, the company’s co-founder and chief experience officer. Launching in Denver was a strategic decision to widen our Western U.S. network and include the beautiful and popular Colorado landscapes and mountain experiences, which are especially loved by both European and American outdoor adventurers.”
The company doesn’t have any additional plans in Colorado at the moment, says Dickhardt. But since the Roadsurfer network also includes locations like Phoenix and Salt Lake City, Denver is a key starting point for a cross-state road trip, and the brand has a one-way rental option if you’d rather fly back home.
In Denver, Roadsurfer offers four types of vehicles, with varying sizes and amenities to meet your group’s needs: the Family Freedom, the Liberty Lodge, the Couple Condo and the Horizon Hopper. The vehicles can accommodate between two to five people for overnight stays.
They include all the creature comforts you’d expect from a camper van or RV: small kitchen areas, bathrooms, beds, a fresh water tank and electrical hookups. Every rental also comes with two camping chairs, a camping table and a fully stocked kitchen box with utensils and dishes.
The price includes the per-night vehicle rental fee, plus a service fee. If you want to bring your pup, you’ll need to pay an extra fee. One nice thing about Roadsurfer is that unlimited mileage is included—you just have to pay for your gas. A second driver is also included at no cost.
Once you’ve made a reservation, you’ll head to Roadsurfer’s Globeville warehouse at the appointed date and time to pick up your vehicle. You’ll watch a tutorial on the vehicle’s features, then head out on your adventure. Bookings are available year-round, so as long as you’ve got a place to park it, you can hit the road and explore in a Roadsurfer vehicle.
