COLA Records and The Laughing Goat present the Deep Cuts Showcase, series 2 hosted by Bette Southern, first Saturday’s 2020, continued Match 7 with Young Pine, The Great Contempt, Veronique, and Casey McCarthy, hosted by Bette Southern.
Young Pine creates toe tapping head nodding that allows sharp lyrics to slip into the psyche easy. While trading fluidly in the sympatico lyrics of contemporary folk, Young Pine dances through timeless idioms as old as the American West and its far flung heritage.
The Great Contempt picks up where visceral punk rock has so far left off, with chaotic minimalism and decadently poetic lyricism. With the vibe of an ecstatic oracular outburst, the three piece grows from a preternaturally refined songwriter fusing with young gems of the front range scene.
Veronique is a singer-songwriter from Elbert County. Her lyrics explore grit, tenderness, being lost, and getting lost — all with an empathy and a feminist sensibility that are at once timely and timeless. The words are given life by a vibrant vocal range. The result is a canvas of piano and vocals.
Casey McCarthy is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, social activist, and local pagan community member. Musical fluidity meets rare dedication to social justice with deep concern for communicating most personally sacred truths through deft guitar and punk rock vocals with neofolk twist.
Bette Southern is a fictitious character from an alter universe where the Wild West was never tamed with a trove of rambunctious songs under her skirt, somewhere next to her .45 – a Colorado bandleader and spitfire emcee.
The Deep Cuts Showcase presents the best songwriters of Colorado and beyond with sets that get to the marrow yet play off each other, with repeat invites to willing high caliber artists, to better hear the full story.
