Event Details

The Playboy of the Western World, by John Millington Synge, is a romantic comedy verging on farce. As the story of our young hero unfolds, we learn his dark secret and are torn between the extremes of adoration and loathing as we are taken on a wild ride where the truth is stranger than fiction. When it debuted in 1907, it was roundly condemned by Irish nationalists for what was considered an unflattering portrayal of Irish society. The generational strife between father and son and the struggle of youth for recognition and independence the core issues that society faces today as standard bearers hold tightly to power while youths push against the very system that they are trying to inherit. This classic work has much to teach us in a world that says it values independent thought but in its heart still longs for the comfort of the familiar.
