El Centro AMISTAD, in collaboration with the Dairy Arts Center presents: Remembering our Dead

November 2nd from 6 to 8 PM  –

Documentary presentation: The Art of Remembering by Raúl Paz Pastrana and Santune by Juan Manuel Díaz and Jorge Ramos. Plus, live music and  “Matachines” dance (which is an intergenerational traditional dance of Mexico).  After the presentation of documentaries, stay for a panel discussion regarding the *Day of the Dead*.  This event is free & open to the public.

An immigrant artist ponders the meaning of life and death in two cultures as he prepares a community altar for the Day of the Dead to remember those whom he has lost and his own native Mexico.

“THE ART OF REMEMBRANCE” captures Mexican artist Daniel Valle as he creates giant paper mache skeleton sculptures and constructs a community altar to remember the dead. This intimate snapshot of a New York City Day of the Dead celebration explores Valle’s quest to preserve the memory of lost loved ones and keep Mexican culture alive through art. Along the way Valle challenges our own notions of the meaning of life and death and reminds us that remembrance truly is an art.

SANTUNE (Day of the Dead)

Directors: Juan M. Díaz García and Jorge Ramos Luna

Production: Colectivo Xanay

Synopsis. Santune documents the Day of the Dead tradition in Bibiano Hernández, an indigenous tutunakú community in Puebla, Mexico. Through the testimony of its inhabitants, we will learn more about the tradition of honoring those who have left this world. Santune is a community celebration, where tamales are shared, where everyone decorates the cemetery and places altars in their homes awaiting the arrival of the Ximawas, the green flies that represent the spirits of our loved ones. About the directors: Jorge Ramos Luna and Juan M. Díaz García are a duo of Mexican audiovisual creators, who have collaborated in the production of various short films, focused on the dissemination of science and culture, the nature conservation and biocultural knowledge, sharing different production tasks such as photography, script and direction.
