Event Details

As one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, Holocaust survivor Henri Dauman—still enthusiastic at 85—took the international photography world by storm in the ‘50s with his images of icons like Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Miles Davis, Yves Saint Laurent, Andy Warhol, Elvis Presley, JFK and Jean-Luc Godard. But, for all of his achievements, few know the details of Dauman’s remarkable origin story. Orphaned at 13, he set out to rebuild his family at any cost. Through love, persistence and uncompromising vision, Dauman created a brilliant career in New York City, where his bold, naturalistic style quickly brought him fame and fortune at his only job, a 30-year assignment at Life magazine. This film explores both the photographer’s traumatic past and the vibrancy of NYC that would define Dauman’s work—through a million negatives—for all of time.
