Event Details
The year 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of the Major Stephen H. Long Expedition to the Colorado Front Range. The Long Expedition was one of many, including Lewis and Clark (1804-1806), Dunbar and Hunter (1804-1806), Freeman and Custis (1806-1807) and Zebulon Pike (1806-1807). These pioneers explored the largest-ever U.S. land acquisition – the Louisiana Purchase. Bounded on the west by the Continental Divide, the acquisition made Boulder County historically all-inclusive.
The changes that have taken place on the Front Range in the last two centuries are difficult to quantify. One easily seen difference is the changing species and population dynamics of birds of prey in response to the human-altered landscape. Sue Cass will be giving an hour talk on Boulder County’s raptors both past and present. The Birds of Prey Foundation will also be joining with live birds. Guests can view these magnificent animals and learn about the work of the Foundation.
About the Speaker:
Born in 1962, Sue Cass has always been an avid learner and had a strong interest in nature. In 2001, she joined the Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS) Volunteer Naturalist program, which escalate the desire to share knowledge of the natural world with others. Sue’s service to BCPOS and on the Board of Directors of the Boulder County Nature Association (BCNA) sharpened her focus on our amazing birds of prey, allowing her to train new volunteer naturalists in raptor ecology and field identification. She also teaches classes for BCNA and the Boulder County Audubon Society (BCAS) on subjects like “Mastering the Many-Morphed Redtail.”
