This is America’s coolest art gallery.
No, really. InStore Magazine crowned Art + Soul Gallery the title of one of the nation’s coolest art galleries a few years ago.
It’s definitely one of Boulder’s coolest — bringing together some of the world’s best art and jewelry. It embodies everything that makes Boulder so special: creativity, class, originality, quality and friendly service. When visiting Boulder, add this to the top of your shopping list.
Art + Soul, 1615 Pearl St. in Boulder, features local emerging and established artists on all kinds of media. It features mostly contemporary (not southwestern, like many Colorado galleries) fine art and some high-quality crafts, spanning canvas paintings to sculptures. The gallery rotates shows every month.
Art + Soul is best known for is its alternative commitment jewelry that easily outshines most traditional wedding rings. Find eye-catching wedding or commitment sets or special order something specific. The jewelry here is set up like works of art, making it fun to look at, even if you can’t swallow the price tag. Much like an art gallery. Except if you’re lucky, you get to wear this work.
The store recently underwent a major renovation, rearranging the space to put a greater emphasis on the jewelry. With the update, it launched a new hand-picked line of commitment jewelry called the Soulmate collection, featuring designs by the likes of Ruth Tomlinson, Anna Sheffield, Megan Thorne and Tura Sugden. After the remodel, the store looks completely different. Shelves of gifts have been replaced with more jewelry cases. Plans are to re-introduce a few gift-style crafts again in the future, but jewelry is the major focus now.
“We pay great attention to presenting to the community a curated collection of both art and jewelry,” says founder Debbie Klein. “We look for unique fine artists and fine jewelry designers who offer something unique. There’s a lot of art and a lot of jewelry out there. A lot of my time is spent searching out people I feel are doing things that are special.”
This is not a traditional jewelry store or a traditional art gallery, she adds.
“We don’t have things made by machine here,” Klein says.
She says you will see unique designs, stuff you wouldn’t see in a typical jewelry store, such as designers working in different mediums and with non-traditional stones. Art + Soul also carries lab-created diamonds, a greener solution to the traditionally mined stones. These are real diamonds, literally grown in a lab.
Klein opened Art + Soul in 2000, in an atmosphere that seamlessly blends creativity with sophistication. She says she wanted to make a gallery that had both high-end and more affordable art that’s still totally spectacular. Around the holidays, Art + Soul has been known to sell some of the best Christmas ornaments.
The 3,000-square-foot gallery and store on East Pearl has a long list of awards backing up how outstanding it is. It always seems to be racking up another “best gallery” award, and 5280 Magazine awarded it Top of the Town for Best Jewelry Gallery in 2008.
Find Art + Soul between Snooze (one of Boulder’s most popular destinations for brunch) and Foolish Craig’s, a long-standing, local favorite, casual restaurant.
Local tip: “One of the best resources we offer is our sales staff. It’s our job to help you decide what you want, to narrow it down. Try on things. It’s a process of learning. Learn about what your preference are. That’s our job to help you get there. And trust your instincts. What you like is what you like, and that’s good.” – Debbie Klein, owner of Art + Soul
